Coordinator: Post Bellum, z.ú.

  • Project
Intergenerational Education in the Czech - Slovak Context

Summary

The project brought together Czech and Slovak educators to strengthen intergenerational dialogue and integrate multi-perspective historical education in schools. It developed a didactic platform and trained 24 teachers in innovative methods.

“Thanks to the Summer School, I’m now much more interested in the situation in Slovakia. I feel I understand it better after meeting my Slovak colleagues. I try to include this context and current events in my teaching.” – Participant of the summer school.

Topic(s) addressed

  • European identity and values
  • Democracy
  • Civic engagement
  • Multi-perspectivity in education
  • Intergenerational learning

Target group(s)

  • 24 teachers in the Czech Republic and Slovakia (directly)
  • 3,000 students and 300 seniors (indirectly)

Methodologies used

The project employed intergenerational and interdisciplinary methods, combining oral history with digital tools. Teachers collaborated with oral history narrators, recording their stories and using them to develop engaging lesson plans. The approach placed strong emphasis on active student participation, critical reflection, and cross-sector collaboration.

Innovation environment

The project created meaningful opportunities for collaboration between Czech and Slovak teachers, schools and NGOs, and across generations. An online platform provided access to primary sources and guided learning activities. A summer school and conference further supported cross-border and intergenerational engagement, fostering innovation and a sense of teacher ownership.

Teachers’ role

Teachers co-created content for the platform, tested new tools, and engaged in joint reflection. They applied new approaches in their classrooms, shared feedback, and acted as multipliers within their communities. Peer learning was central to all project activities.

Impact and output

The project engaged teachers, students, and seniors, fostering meaningful intergenerational exchange. Key outputs included an online platform, a summer school, and a major conference. Teachers gained new tools, students explored history through lived experience, and intergenerational understanding was significantly strengthened.
