Assisting adults to learn

Summary

Education Behind Bars is a project that offers a second chance to individuals in prison, empowering them to re-engage with society and regain confidence in themselves. Recognised for its innovative contribution to adult education within correctional facilities, the project places strong emphasis on democratic values, civic participation, and the empowerment of socially excluded individuals.

It serves as a bridge between education and social reintegration by providing tailored, meaningful learning experiences that support personal growth and inclusion.

"This project reminded us that education is not only a right but also a bridge to reintegration — even behind the bars of a prison."

Topic(s) addressed

  • Participation in democratic life
  • Civic engagement
  • Adult education in correctional settings
  • European identity

Target group(s)

  • 9 adult educators
  • 18+ inmates at the Nigrita Correctional Facility

Methodologies used

The project employed a diverse range of learner-centred methodologies to support personal development and social reintegration. These included experiential learning, which allowed participants to engage actively with real-life situations; art therapy and mindfulness, which fostered emotional expression, self-awareness, and well-being; and intercultural learning, which promoted mutual understanding and respect. Collaborative learning and the exchange of personal experiences further strengthened social bonds and peer support, creating a safe and inclusive environment.

Innovation environment

The project is considered innovative for its use of education as a tool for social change in hard-to-reach environments, specifically, prisons. Establishing a positive school climate within a correctional setting requires creative pedagogical strategies, heightened empathy, and the active participation of learners.

Collaboration with Estonian institutions added significant European value by facilitating the exchange of good practices and integrating European perspectives into the educational framework. This transnational cooperation strengthened intercultural understanding and helped shape an innovative, inclusive, and transformative educational model - one that can be replicated in other prison-based Second Chance Schools.

Teachers’ role

The educators served as agents of transformation, reflecting critically on their own practices, learning from European peers, and integrating new, innovative methods into their teaching with incarcerated adults.

Impact and output

The project led to the meaningful empowerment of educators and significant improvements in teaching practices within correctional facilities. It strengthened institutional networks and fostered a sense of European identity among both staff and learners. Its positive impact extended beyond the immediate participants, influencing other Second Chance Schools operating in prisons across Greece. The Second Chance School of Nigrita successfully applied the experience and knowledge gained through the project, transforming them into renewed teaching practices and innovative interventions that enhanced the overall educational process. At the same time, the school expanded its outreach to both the local and wider community.
