Summary

‘Vox Pop Academy Europe’ developed the ‘MixUp’ online platform to enable students to engage in dialogue with peers who hold different opinions. This innovative online learning tool is a powerful resource for civic education, fostering critical thinking, active citizenship, and meaningful participation in democratic society.

“We could chat with a lot of different countries, who of course have different perspectives, we could have very interesting conversations and share our opinions and experiences.”

Methodologies used

The project uses an online learning tool to engage a diverse group of VET students across countries in inclusive, interactive education. Using familiar digital media, students actively reflect on and discuss differing opinions, thereby developing key competences such as communication, critical thinking, and cultural awareness. A built-in translation tool enables multilingual dialogue, promoting cooperation and broadening participation. This non-formal method integrates smoothly with formal learning, supporting multidisciplinary, learner-driven education.

Innovation environment

MixUp connects students from different countries based on contrasting views, identified through tailored questionnaires. By engaging in meaningful dialogue with peers they wouldn’t normally meet, students challenge assumptions, confront misinformation, and reflect on their own beliefs, fostering civic engagement and critical awareness. Schools act as enablers of this innovation, applying a sustainable, whole-school approach that makes use of existing resources. Cross-cultural cooperation further strengthens the project’s impact and inclusiveness.

Teachers’ role

Teachers play an active role in the MixUp learning method and can integrate the tool into their citizenship education curriculum. They guide students through preparatory lessons and reflective feedback sessions, ensuring a meaningful learning experience. By using MixUp, teachers act as innovators, fostering intercultural dialogue, promoting civic engagement, and supporting the development of active citizenship.

Impact and output

Participant feedback has been overwhelmingly positive; students enjoy the discussions, find them engaging, and gain valuable insights. The project strengthens critical thinking and dialogue skills, promoting active citizenship and helping to counter misinformation and polarisation. The online tool ensures broad accessibility, making inclusivity a key feature, particularly for learners with fewer opportunities. Its impact extends beyond the immediate target group, inspiring peers, teachers, schools, and the wider community.
