Small scale cooperation in forestry sector

Summary

This project strengthened vocational training in forestry by advancing learners’ digital and workplace competences through the integration of VR-based education and international partnerships. By combining practical forestry expertise with technological tools and cross-border collaboration, the project equipped both students and educators with essential skills for lifelong learning, thereby aligning with the EITA “Skills for Life” theme.

“The project demonstrated how digital solutions and international cooperation can make vocational learning more engaging and meaningful. VR opened new ideas for teaching forestry skills.”

Topic(s) addressed

  • Digital competence
  • STEM skills
  • Vocational innovation
  • Sustainable forestry practices
  • International cooperation and
  • Work‑life skills development

Target group(s)

  • VET forestry students and vocational teachers/trainers in Finland and Estonia.

Methodologies used

The project applied innovative, learner‑centred methodologies combining VR‑based simulations, practical vocational learning and international cooperation. Key competences such as digital skills, scientific understanding and workplace competences were developed through hands‑on piloting and formative feedback. Formal vocational education was enriched with non‑formal and informal learning, and learners played an active role in testing and improving the learning environments. Cooperation with external stakeholders and a technology partner ensured relevance to r real-world workplace needs.

Innovation environment

Learning environments combined classrooms, real-world forestry training settings, digital platforms and VR simulations. The organisations acted as enablers of innovation by supporting cross‑sectoral cooperation between vocational education providers and a technology partner. A positive and open organisational climate encouraged experimentation, while the sustainable use of resources and simulation‑based learning supported responsible and future‑oriented educational practices.

Teachers’ role

Teachers and trainers acted as co‑developers and pedagogical innovators. They actively participated in designing, testing and piloting the VR learning environments, integrating new digital tools into vocational teaching. Through international peer learning and cooperation, teachers strengthened their pedagogical and digital competences and supported learners’ motivation, wellbeing and engagement in the learning process.

Impact and output

The project had a strong direct impact on students by improving their understanding of forestry work processes through immersive and visual learning. Teachers increased their awareness  of the potential of VR and their competence in using it pedagogically. The results have been shared within and beyond the partner organisations, creating spill‑over effects for other students, teachers and vocational education providers. The VR learning environments remain in active use following the project’s completion, supporting long‑term impact and sustainability.
