Mobility in Europe – a real opportunity for professional development

Summary

The project addresses the current policies and priorities of the European Union. Its objectives, activities and results focus on digital skills and competences, the environment and climate change, and the development of disadvantaged rural and urban areas. It has a positive impact on the beneficiaries and the school. The project’s sustainability is reflected in Bulgaria’s education policy, including changes to state educational standards and programmes in veterinary medicine.

"My participation in the Erasmus+ Bologna project has been a personal and creative development. It has become a bridge between Europe and my high school, through the application of innovative teaching. It is very inspiring for my students."

Topic(s) addressed

  • Application of ecology in veterinary medicine, sustainable farm management and biosecurity
  • Digital competencies in veterinary medicine and food technology education
  • Development of disadvantaged areas

Target group(s)

  • Teachers – 3
  • Students from: Veterinary Technician – 16
  • Food and Beverage Quality Technician – 8

Methodologies used

The project implements an innovative training system and focuses on critical thinking. Through a multidisciplinary approach, skills and competences from disciplines related to veterinary medicine and food technology are combined to solve practical cases. Key competences are acquired through creative thinking, the application of green skills and adaptability. Students analyse their own progress, use specialised software and develop personal responsibility.  The project activities ensured equal access for students from different social and ethnic backgrounds.  Workplace mentors were recruited to participate in the project. National examination programmes and plans have been introduced at the national level.

Innovation environment

The learning environment was supported through innovative approaches to teaching and learning and the use of specialised software related to veterinary medicine, food technology and food quality.  The approach was implemented through the creation of national and examination programmes in professional disciplines. The objectives  included acquiring competences in ecological methods for the sustainable development of farms, bio-waste management, biosecurity and bio-products. The holistic approach includes - teachers, learners and parents, partners.  The project was presented at the “Open Day” and “European Vocational Education Week”, as well as to universities and the Veterinary Union. Parents observed increased motivation and a stronger professional orientation among learners.

Teachers’ role

Teachers in the fields of veterinary medicine and food technology introduced modern teaching methods. They presented European practices in ecological farming and veterinary medicine and the integration of specialised software. They prepared students to work with live animals, clinical cases and stressful situations in laboratories. They supported students during mobility activities and in working with specialised veterinary medicine and food technology software. They mastered specialised terminology in the fields of veterinary medicine and food safety. They assessed practical professional skills in real-world settings. They collaborated with Italian veterinary clinics, farms, and food processing plants. They shared their experience and conducted workshops for their colleagues.

Impact and output

Teachers improved their competences  in digitalisation and innovative teaching methods. They  became familiar with new food technologies used in Italy. The high school enhanced its national reputation. The students gained knowledge and skills in  ecology as it relates to veterinary medicine and animal husbandry,  as well as in the quality control of new food products. They acquired skills in the production of organic food. The project involved people from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds. Workshops were organised to extend the impact of innovations within the high school and at national level. Curricula were adapted. The information events attracted many participants – veterinarians, farmers and parents.
