Interactive methods for measuring and developing the skills of pre-school children: new solutions from SmartKindergarten

Summary

The project made an innovative contribution to developing “skills for life” from an early age. Through a playful, digital assessment and learning system, it strengthened key competences, including literacy, numeracy, scientific thinking, digital skills and active citizenship, while supporting equal opportunities for children in disadvantaged regions. Its scalable, bilingual approach empowered educators, engaged families and set a new standard for evidence-based early childhood education in Europe.

Methodologies used

The project introduced an innovative digital approach combining pedagogy, developmental psychology and technology. Through interactive, game-based activities, children actively developed cognitive, social and motor competences while receiving continuous formative assessment. The project connected formal kindergarten education with informal family learning through clear feedback and parental involvement. Inclusion and participation were ensured for all children, including those with fewer opportunities. Teachers, specialists, parents and international partners co-created and tested the system, strengthening cooperation, intercultural learning and the exchange of good practice.

Innovation environment

The project fostered innovation through a digital, play-based learning environment that supports individualised development and formative assessment. Teachers, specialists and parents worked together, creating a positive and collaborative organisational culture. Sustainable digital tools and resources ensure long-term use, while a whole-organisation approach engaged all stakeholders. Cross-sectoral and international cooperation combined educational, technological and management expertise, strengthening innovation.

Teachers’ role

Teachers were key innovators throughout the project. They co-designed, tested and refined the digital assessment system, ensuring that innovative methods were grounded in real educational needs. Their active involvement strengthened ownership and creativity, while continuous training enhanced their digital, pedagogical and assessment competences. The playful, child-centred approach promoted children's wellbeing, motivation and confidence. Regular collaboration, peer learning and international exchanges enabled teachers to share experiences, reflect on their practice and jointly develop new solutions, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.

Impact and output

The project had a strong direct impact on children, teachers and parents by introducing a playful, digital assessment system that improved motivation, enabled the early identification of learning needs and supported individualised development. It promoted inclusion by ensuring equal opportunities for participation for all children, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds and diverse linguistic environments. The impact extended well beyond the partner institutions: parents became more engaged through clear feedback, and other professionals showed interest in adopting the system. The project therefore generated a significant spill-over effect at local, regional and international levels.
