HEROES on the Wild Side

HEROES on the Wild Side
HEROES on the Wild Side

Summary

In the “H.E.R.O. – Help Everyone Reach Out!” project, students explored themes of democratisation and digitalisation. They engaged in service-learning activities and learned to identify fake news. As a final task, they wrote articles for two newsletters, sharing their insights and reflections.

The “Walk on the Wild Side” project took participants on a shared journey along the Via Francigena in Sicily and the Camino de Santiago in La Rioja. It promoted sustainable tourism and environmental awareness. A drone video captured and summarised the entire experience.

"Being part of an Erasmus+ mobility has been one of the most enriching experiences of my life. It made me realise that learning goes far beyond textbooks. It’s about connection, discovery, and growing as a person."

Topic(s) addressed

  • Common European heritage and diversity
  • Integration of students from disadvantaged backgrounds into European projects
  • Promoting common values such as tolerance, respect, democracy and civic engagement

Target group(s)

  • 29 secondary school pupils
  • Teaching staff
  • Local community (food bank, soup kitchen, nursing home)

Methodologies used

The project applies a multidisciplinary approach by linking subjects such as democracy, digitalisation, sustainable tourism, heritage, local customs and traditions, the environment, and languages through thematic activities. It fosters key competences - knowledge, skills, and attitudes - through collaborative, real-world tasks supported by formative assessment. Learning is holistic, combining formal classes with non-formal (workshops, fieldwork) and informal (peer exchange, family hosting) contexts. Inclusion and student participation are central, with learners actively involved in both planning and reflection. Cooperation with local NGOs, cultural institutions, and international schools further enriches the experience.

Innovation environment

The project promotes innovative learning environments by positioning schools as hubs of creativity, inclusion, and collaboration. A whole-school approach ensures that all staff contribute to fostering a positive climate where students feel safe, motivated, and engaged. Resources - such as multilingual teaching, digital tools, and flexible spaces - are used sustainably and creatively, from service learning to outdoor activities during cultural walks. Intersectoral cooperation with NGOs, local authorities, and European partners strengthens the link between education and the wider community, reinforcing social and civic values while supporting students’ personal and academic growth.

Teachers’ role

Teachers play an active role as innovators by designing interdisciplinary, learner-centred activities that connect academic content with real-life contexts. They promote student well-being by fostering inclusive, supportive environments and encouraging active participation. Through Erasmus+ mobility activities, educators enhance their own competences - such as digital literacy, intercultural communication, and formative assessment - while engaging in peer learning and international collaboration. Shared planning, co-teaching, and reflective practice strengthen teamwork and cultivate a professional learning community committed to continuous improvement and educational innovation.

Impact and output

The project’s innovative teaching and learning processes have had a direct impact on students by enhancing key competences, increasing motivation, and strengthening their sense of belonging. Particular attention is given to the inclusion of participants with fewer opportunities. Teachers develop and implement new methodologies and intercultural skills, which are shared across the school community. Indirectly, the project inspires other students, involves families, and reinforces community ties through collaboration with local stakeholders. As a result, the school becomes more open, inclusive, and connected to Europe - fostering long-term cultural and educational transformation.
