Summary

EU-PREPARE is a multilingual collection of short comics and interactive games designed to promote civic values, environmental awareness, healthcare knowledge, and digital skills. Co-created by artists, educators, and social workers, the project supports migrants and refugees by enhancing their understanding of key societal issues while simultaneously strengthening their language and communication skills.

“The purpose is to get a personal message from a project participant, in English or in a national language, that is engaging or encouraging.”

Topic(s) addressed

  • Civic participation
  • Environmental awareness
  • Healthcare access
  • Digital skills
  • Empowering migrants and refugees through inclusive, multilingual learning tools aligned with the EITA focus on integration and inclusion

Target group(s)

  • Families of refugees recently arrived in Europe
  • Ukrainian women arriving alone or with children
  • Families who are about to leave for Europe through safe and legal pathways from Middle Eastern countries, assisted by official European organisations
  • Trainers and social workers providing assistance to people with refugee and migrant backgrounds

Methodologies used

EU-PREPARE employs innovative, learner-centred methods by combining multidisciplinary approaches with storytelling and digital games. It promotes key competences, including language, civic, digital, and health-related skills, through activities that integrate formative assessment. By bridging formal, non-formal, and informal learning, the project ensures flexibility and real-life relevance. It fosters inclusion, participation, and cooperation, giving learners an active role in their learning journey. Developed in collaboration with artists, educators, and social workers, EU-PREPARE also strengthens cooperation with external stakeholders to support the integration of migrants and refugees.

Innovation environment

EU-PREPARE creates an innovative learning environment by integrating comics and games into both formal and non-formal settings, positioning schools as drivers of innovation. It fosters a positive, inclusive climate by addressing real-life challenges faced by migrants and refugees. The project ensures the sustainable use of resources through multilingual, reusable digital tools. Adopting a whole-school approach, it actively involves teachers, social workers, and language educators, while promoting cross-sectoral cooperation with community organisations to support holistic, learner-centred integration.

Teachers’ role

Teachers and educators in EU-PREPARE play a key role as innovators, co-creating content with artists and social workers to ensure it is relevant, inclusive, and responsive to learners’ needs. They promote well-being by using creative, culturally sensitive materials that actively engage and support migrant learners. Through the project, educators strengthen their skills in digital tools, intercultural communication, and formative assessment. EU-PREPARE also fosters cooperation and peer learning, enabling educators to exchange practices and collaboratively implement learner-centred, competence-based approaches.

Impact and output

EU-PREPARE has a strong direct impact on migrants and refugees by enhancing their language, civic, health, and digital skills through engaging and accessible tools. It promotes the inclusion of learners with fewer opportunities by offering content in six languages and addressing real-life integration challenges. Its innovative methods create a spill-over effect, inspiring other teachers, schools, and local communities to adopt inclusive, competence-based approaches to learning. Parents and community stakeholders also benefit, gaining greater awareness and becoming more actively involved in the integration process.
