Summary
Through long-term learning placements, "Empowered citizens across borders" promotes active citizenship, democratic participation, and intercultural understanding among young Europeans. The project helps students develop into resilient, socially responsible individuals who contribute to inclusive and democratic societies across Europe
'"Thanks to this project, I found my voice as an European citizen! Living and learning abroad showed me that I can be part of positive change, both locally and across Europe."
Topic(s) addressed
The project strengthens citizenship education by promoting active citizenship, democratic participation, social responsibility, and intercultural understanding through immersive long-term learning experiences across Europe.
Target group(s)
Final-year secondary school students (aged 17–18) participating in long-term learning placements in France, Italy and Spain
Methodologies used
The project introduces an innovative approach by blending formal education with non-formal and informal learning experiences abroad. Students co-design their learning paths, integrating academic subjects within their field of study. Emphasising multidisciplinary learning, key competence development, and formative assessment, the project places inclusion, participation and cooperation at its core. Strong partnerships between schools and local actors support this process, empowering learners to take active ownership of their personal and civic development.
Innovation environment
The project fosters innovation by creating inclusive school environments that embrace European mobility as a catalyst for growth. Schools are positioned as enablers of change, cultivating a positive climate where learning extends beyond the classroom. Adopting a whole-school approach, the project engages all staff and leadership, while building cross-sectoral cooperation with local communities. Resources are used sustainably to ensure long-term impact, embedding innovation into everyday practices and supporting students on their journey towards active citizenship.
Teachers’ role
Teachers play a central role as innovators by designing flexible learning plans that integrate formal and non-formal education. They support student wellbeing during placements abroad, encouraging resilience and intercultural openness. Through peer learning and cooperation with European colleagues, teachers enhance their professional skills and exchange best practices. Their active involvement helps cultivate a school culture that embraces inclusion, democratic participation, and lifelong learning for both students and staff.
Impact and output
The project has had a profound impact on final-year students, enhancing their civic engagement, intercultural skills, and resilience. Supporting participants with fewer opportunities is a core element of our approach. Its innovative practices create a ripple effect, benefiting not only the direct participants but also other students, teachers, schools, parents, and local communities. The project fosters a stronger sense of European identity, promotes inclusion, and cultivates a sustainable culture of active citizenship beyond the direct participants.
