  • Project
ELAN - Erasmus Learning for Adult Needs

Summary

The project placed a strong emphasis on citizenship education, democratic participation, and civic engagement. Through inclusive, hands-on learning and transnational exchanges, it empowered adult learners to reflect on shared values, strengthen their critical thinking, and take an active role in their communities. In doing so, it promoted a deeper sense of European identity and democratic responsibility.

"This project was a deeply educational experience that left a lasting mark on my personal and academic journey.

Visiting a symbolic European city like Strasbourg—so rich in history, institutions, and intercultural dialogue—allowed me to truly grasp the value of active citizenship, democratic participation, and civic engagement.”

Topic(s) addressed

  • Active citizenship
  • Democratic participation
  • Social inclusion
  • Environmental awareness
  • Digital upskilling
  • Intercultural dialogue
  • Community engagement
  • Promotion of European values through adult learning and mobility

Target group(s)

  • Adult learners (24) with fewer opportunities between 17 and 71, second chance at education or migrants.

Methodologies used

The project adopted a multidisciplinary approach to support the development of key competences - civic, social, and digital - through active participation and collaboration. Learners visited the European Parliament, the Council of Europe, and its Youth Centre, gaining first-hand insight into democratic institutions. Engagement with local organisations, such as the Agence du Climat, reinforced environmental awareness, while city treasure hunts and intercultural workshops promoted cooperation, autonomy, and self-confidence. Through interactive sessions, guided visits, and dialogue with professionals and activists, students deepened their understanding of their role as active European citizens and the value of collective action in addressing social and environmental challenges.

Innovation environment

The project fostered an innovation-friendly and inclusive learning environment, where hands-on group activities encouraged collaboration and active participation among learners and staff. Group mobility activities prioritised green travel to Strasbourg, with participants walking or using public transport to support sustainability goals. Direct engagement with local institutions such as the Agence du Climat, as well as key European bodies - including the European Parliament, the Council of Europe, and its Youth Centre - provided immersive, real-world learning experiences. These encounters enabled participants to explore the practical dimensions of civic engagement, environmental responsibility, youth participation, and democratic values.

Teachers’ role

Teachers were key drivers of innovation, designing and facilitating inclusive, learner-centred activities that fostered active citizenship and personal development. Their professional agency was strengthened through cross-institutional collaboration and peer learning, promoting a shared culture of reflection and pedagogical experimentation. By creating safe, participatory environments and adapting their methods to meet diverse needs, teachers actively supported student wellbeing. Through mobility and intercultural exchange, they further developed their civic, digital, and intercultural competences—reinforcing their role as facilitators of meaningful and transformative learning.

Impact and output

The project had a strong impact on adult learners, particularly those with fewer opportunities, by strengthening their civic awareness, self-confidence, and sense of belonging. Participants developed key competences through inclusive, participatory learning, with many reporting increased motivation and engagement. Teachers enhanced their professional practice and introduced innovative approaches in their institutions. The project generated a wider spill-over effect - mobilising colleagues, engaging families and local communities, and reinforcing networks among partner schools. Its influence extended well beyond the classroom, fostering a lasting commitment to democratic participation and social inclusion.
