  • Project
Digital portfolio ‘Our Europe’

Summary

This innovative project leverages modern technology to present geographical, cultural, historical and social information about Europe from the perspective of young people. It enables users to explore Europe interactively, connecting various sources of information while promoting education, language learning, and social and cultural understanding. With its intuitive interface and use of open-source technologies, the project is easily accessible to a broad audience, from students to the general public.

“Thanks to the project, we gained new experiences, got a glimpse into a different society, and analysed and compared issues that, in one way or another, affect all of Europe. Judge the results for yourself.”

Topic(s) addressed

  • Strengthening shared EU values
  • Promoting social inclusion and sensitivity to different opinions and perspectives
  • Intercultural dialogue
  • Understanding Europe's historical and cultural heritage
  • Strengthening critical thinking
  • Media literacy and ethics in lifelong learning

Target group(s)

  • Active and engaged third-year grammar school students interested in European values

Methodologies used

The project combined history, geography, language, and information and communication technologies, encouraging students to explore European heritage from multiple perspectives while developing knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Teachers used formative assessment through feedback and self-evaluation. A portfolio summarised everything the students had learned at school, during extracurricular activities, and as part of their own work. Students collaborated on content creation, incorporated diverse viewpoints, conducted research, designed the portfolio layout, and presented their work to an audience. Involving a partner school further enriched the learning process.

The portfolio added personal depth, integrated output measurement, and fostered an authentic, creative, and collaborative approach to education.

Innovation environment

The project encouraged the school to adopt modern digital tools and teaching methods. A culture of cooperation and mutual respect between students and teachers helped build a friendly and inclusive learning environment. The project made sustainable use of digital and human resources and engaged multiple stakeholders, including teachers of various subjects, students, parents, and external partners. As a result, it contributed to the creation of a dynamic, collaborative, and open educational environment, an essential foundation for innovation in schools.

The project also focused on developing language skills across real-life contexts, enhancing students’ future opportunities in the labour market. It promoted education in European citizenship and values, encouraged respect for regional and national identity, and raised awareness of a united Europe.

Teachers’ role

Teachers involved in the project developed new approaches to teaching, encouraging active student engagement and using a variety of methods that combine formal and informal education. They also prioritised students' mental well-being, helping to build self-confidence and promote meaningful participation. Through collaboration and exchange of experiences, teachers enhanced their own skills and competences, contributing to improved teaching quality and overall effectiveness.

Impact and output

The innovative teaching and learning processes in the "Our Europe" Digital Portfolio project had a direct impact on students, equipping them with new skills, knowledge, and self-confidence, and an indirect impact on those around them. Working on the project in the partner country encouraged participants to evaluate their own work, and that of others, within an atmosphere of trust. They also learned to accept setbacks and to draw lessons from them. Students with fewer opportunities were actively involved in meaningful activities. The project also inspired other teachers, and its positive effects extended to parents, classmates, and the wider community.  Beyond the creation of a digital portfolio, the project fostered greater cooperation, creativity, and an innovative spirit throughout the educational environment.
