Summary
As part of a five-day educational trip to Brussels, a group of women and mothers with a migration background - participants in adult education courses at the Katholisches Bildungswerk Kärnten - engaged in an immersive learning experience focused on the European Union. This educational trip gave women with fewer opportunities the chance to familiarise themselves with the European Union, its history, its values and its institutions. Enlightening encounters, insightful visits, and interactive workshops strengthened their understanding of democracy. In an open and supportive learning atmosphere, innovative adult education methods encouraged reflection, strengthened political awareness and promoted independent engagement at grassroots level.
"The trip to Brussels showed me how important cohesion and cultural diversity are in Europe. I was particularly touched to see a picture with “Woman, Life, Freedom” - a symbol of global solidarity and democratic values." Shohreh Kavehnezhad

Methodologies used
Innovative adult education methods were used, including on-site, experience-based learning, dialogue-based learning with role play, peer-to-peer exchange, and participatory workshops. Visits to various institutions that addressed the EU from different perspectives opened up opportunities for participants to actively reflect on their role in democracy. Concrete examples with practical relevance sparked discussions and promoted critical thinking. Using digital tools, the participants also explored the historical and social contexts of the EU, which further strengthened their motivation and sense of personal responsibility to engage in social development.
Innovation environment
The project powerfully demonstrated the effectiveness of shared on-site learning experiences for adults. Visits to selected institutions, insights into the working world of people who work in or for the EU, and a historical overview of European integration all contributed to a deeper understanding of democratic processes and European interconnections. The open and positive group atmosphere played a key role - respectful dialogue and shared reflection during the workshops, on the train and even over breakfast made the learning experience not only intensive but also lasting and personally enriching.
Teachers’ role
The role of the tour guide as an adult educator combined a range of andragogical and organisational responsibilities. The trip was carefully planned, with well-chosen educational programmes placed in a meaningful overall context. Open discussions were encouraged, guided and moderated with as much sensitivity as possible, always with care not to dominate. A trusting learning atmosphere was created in which all participants could actively contribute. The learning process was supported in a respectful and appreciative manner, fostering long-term impact.
Impact and output
The project was specifically designed to support participants with fewer opportunities. Direct access to EU institutions and active engagement with democratic processes deepened the women's understanding of European contexts, particularly in light of their predominantly Muslim cultural backgrounds. This experience fostered greater critical reflection on the womens’ own role as active citizens and the significance of European values. Interactive exchanges and diverse workshops contributed to a broadened political awareness. The impact extends beyond the individual participants, as the knowledge and motivation gained are shared within their social networks, creating a wider ripple effect.
