Build a democratic and inclusive school environment

Summary

We believe that the project was awarded the European Innovative Teaching Award for its innovative approach to civic education, promoting active student participation, teamwork, and community engagement. Through creative activities - such as educational games, eco-actions, inclusive events, and shared decision-making organised by the Student Community - the project empowered students to become inclusive, engaged, and responsible citizens.

“Thanks to the project, we’re building a school where everyone feels safe, included and respectful. We have learned that democracy means listening, caring, respecting, and growing into active, responsible, and empathetic citizens every day.”

Methodologies used

The project adopts innovative, learner-centred approaches that promote active participation, dialogue, and collaboration. Students engage in real decision-making processes through school councils and inclusive classroom discussions. Teachers apply democratic teaching strategies, such as peer learning, role-play, and project-based activities, that address real-life civic challenges. A strong focus on inclusion ensures that diverse voices are heard, particularly those of underrepresented groups. This hands-on, participatory model fosters critical thinking, empathy, and a deeper understanding of democratic values in everyday school life.

Innovation environment

The project transforms schools into innovation hubs by fostering a positive, inclusive climate where everyone feels valued. It adopts a whole-school approach, engaging teachers, students, and staff in democratic practices. The sustainable use of resources ensures long-term impact, integrating digital tools and community spaces into everyday learning. Cross-sectoral cooperation with local authorities, NGOs, and families strengthens support networks. This collaborative environment nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and active participation, positioning schools as catalysts for innovative teaching and learning.

Teachers’ role

Teachers involved in the project play a key role in designing and implementing student-centred methods that encourage active participation and critical thinking. They enhance their skills through ongoing professional development and collaboration, sharing best practices and adapting democratic teaching strategies. By prioritising student inclusion, they create a supportive environment that fosters both creativity and diversity. In doing so, teachers drive innovation within the school, ensuring that teaching evolves to meet the needs of diverse learners and prepares students for active, responsible citizenship.

Impact and output

The project’s promotion of inclusion, participation, and democratic values had a significant impact on students, educators, parents, and the wider community. Students - particularly those with fewer opportunities - developed communication skills, a sense of belonging, and greater self-confidence. Teachers adopted more inclusive practices, and the whole-school strategy inspired other schools and stakeholders. In addition, the project encouraged civic engagement beyond the classroom and strengthened relations between the school and the community.
