Art and Democracy in Kindergarten, through innovative pedagogical approaches

Summary

The project was recognised for its outstanding integration of art, democratic values, and innovative approaches in early childhood education. It successfully enhanced children’s participation, self-expression, and creativity within a democratic and inclusive learning environment.

“Through Erasmus+, we were able to transform our school into a space of creativity, reflection, and democratic expression for young children.”

Topic(s) addressed

  • Creativity
  • Arts and culture
  • Democracy and inclusive democratic participation
  • Early childhood education and care

Target group(s)

  • 86 preschool-aged children
  • 11 educators

Methodologies used

The project employed a combination of formal and non-formal learning methods, creating an Atelier classroom inspired by the Reggio Emilia and Montessori approaches. It incorporated outdoor education and prioritised the active participation of children in their own learning processes. Collaboration with the local community further enriched the educational experience.

Innovation environment

The project’s innovation lies in its use of art as a tool for democratic expression from early childhood. Children actively contributed to shaping both the learning spaces and the activities, fostering collaboration, a sense of responsibility, and freedom of expression. Atelier spaces and natural learning corners were created to support a holistic educational approach and encourage cross-sectoral collaboration. The overarching aim was to cultivate democratic awareness and enhance the overall school environment.

Teachers’ role

The educators were professionally empowered, broadened their skillsets, and played an active role in implementing the project’s innovative practices.

Impact and output

The project strengthened the participation of all children, including those with fewer opportunities, while also empowering parents and fostering the creation of a vibrant learning community. Results were disseminated both within the school and more broadly, contributing to the expansion of good practices through workshops and strategic partnerships. These actions aimed to raise awareness of the cultural dimension of mobility, promote engagement with cultural heritage, and foster a strong sense of European identity by encouraging interaction with diverse cultures across Europe.
